The status of Gervonta Davis' next fight currently remains a mystery, though fans have been given fresh cause for optimism this week.

Davis is scheduled to defend his WBA lightweight world title against Lamont Roach on March 1 in New York.

However, just before Christmas the American took to social media and indicated it had now been scrapped.

In a simple Instagram story post, Tank wrote: "The fight is f***ing cancelled."

At the same time Davis was seemingly announcing the cancellation of their fight, Roach released a video of himself shadow boxing in the gym after sparring.

He then followed up by posting a statement that suggested he had no idea the contest had been scrapped.

"The f*** ya keep asking me for?" he said, replying to fans on his Instagram story a couple of hours after Davis' initial post.

"He said that s*** not me. I'm locked in ain't s*** changed.

"March 1st Brooklyn #AndTheNew."

It remains to be seen whether the fight will go ahead, though fight organisers PBC have not released any statement confirming an official cancellation in the nine days since Davis' post.

On Boxing Day, Lamont Roach Sr (father and trainer of the challenger) told BoxingScene: “We haven’t heard anything.

"As far as I am concerned, the fight is still on... Nothing has changed on our end."

Davis has been radio silent since his initial post on Christmas Eve.

However, on New Year's Day, fans were given fresh cause for optimism that the fight will still take place after all.

Firstly, PBC posted a 'Happy New Year' graphic featuring an image of Davis.

And then Davis' own promotional company GTD Promotions shared this post on their story.

They added the text 'See you March 1', seemingly indicating that the fight is going ahead as planned.

Time will tell if it does indeed happen, but as things stand there has been no official notice of any cancellation.
